Tennessee's Office of the Repealer, whose job it is to recommend state statutes that should be eliminated from state law, has identified a 19th century mandate for providing a Bible to every prison inmate. The law now declares: "Each inmate shall be provided with a Bible, which the inmate may be permitted to peruse in the inmate's cell at such times as the inmate is not required to perform prison labor."
