A majority of American adults (57%) say knowing what is right or wrong is a matter of personal experience. At the same time, a majority (59%) also agrees “the Bible provides us with absolute moral truths which are the same for all people in all situations, without exception.” David Kinnaman, president of Barna Group which conducted the research, calls it "widespread cognitive dissonance" and says, "When we peel back the layers, we find that many Christians are using the way of Jesus to pursue the way of self." Kenneth E. Bailey, the scholar who introduced evangelicals to Middle Eastern culture and history, died May 23, 2016 at age 85. Bailey gave Western readers “the eyes to see” the deeper significance of Jesus’ life and stories by placing them in the cultural context of the Middle East, publishing books like Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes (IVP Academic, 2007) and Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes (IVP Academic, 2011). If you've been following along since the beginning, you've explored each of the "Pauline epistles"—the letters written by the apostle Paul to the early Christian communities. By reading through these letters, you've gotten a thorough look at the state of the early Christian church, and a comprehensive tour of the spiritual priorities that should dominate a Christian's everyday life. If you missed this series, or if you want to revisit any of the entries, here's a list of what we covered.
