Died: Bible Scholar Thomas Oden (1931–2016)

Thomas C. Oden died December 8 at age 85. He was active in the Confessing Movement in America, particularly within the United Methodist Church, and was president of The Institute for Classical Christian Studies. He suggested that Christians need to rely upon the wisdom of the historical church, particularly the early church, rather than on modern scholarship and theology.

Because of Bethlehem: An Interview with Max Lucado

Does the rush of celebrating Christmas get in the way of appreciating its profound meaning? A baby in a manger became the King on the cross. Christmas proclaims the truth of Easter to come. This year seize the significance. Focus on what matters. Bible Gateway interviewed Max Lucado about his book, Because of Bethlehem: Love Is Born, Hope Is Here (Thomas Nelson, 2016).

The Story of the Bible in Only 10 Chapters: An Interview with J. Carl Laney

Book chapters help readers understand and follow a book’s story line as it advances step-by-step. The Bible is a bit different. Instead of being divided into chapters, it’s divided into books. But the 66 books of the Bible can be divided into 10 major sections based on their literary form and content. We can understand the Bible better if we understand how each section advances the great story of God’s redemption of fallen humanity. Bible Gateway interviewed J. Carl Laney about his series of blog posts, The Story of the Bible in 10 Chapters, on Western Seminary’s blog Transformed.

Fear and Joy to the World—Guest Post by Philip Yancey

Reading the accounts of Jesus’ birth and resurrection back-to-back, I note that Jesus began and ended life wrapped in restraints: the swaddling clothes in a manger, the burial shroud in a tomb. In order to visit earth, he fully accepted its constraints—the story of Christmas, and also of the cross. In order to restore earth, he broke out of the constraints, casting off the burial clothes to herald a new era that would end in hope and glory.

Why Are Jesus’ Genealogies in Matthew and Luke Different?

In this adaptation from Four Portraits, One Jesus: A Survey of Jesus and the Gospels, Mark L. Strauss says, “The birth narratives in both Matthew and Luke help answer the question, 'Who is Jesus and where did he come from?' One of the ways each book does this is by recounting Jesus’ genealogy. The problem is: the genealogies are different.”
