According to Open Doors' 2017 World Watch List, North Korea remains the most dangerous place to be a Christian (for 14 straight years), followed by Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Sudan in the top five. Approximately 215 million Christians experience high, very high, or extreme persecution. The annual list examines pressures faced by Christians in five spheres of life (private, family, community, national, and church), plus levels of religiously motivated violence, in order to rank the top 50 countries where "Christians face the most persecution."

John Herbert Sailhamer, an evangelical Old Testament scholar, died Jan. 9, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. The author of more than 15 books and various articles and essays, his writing centered on reading the Bible—the Pentateuch in particular—as a unified, coherent whole. Dr. Sailhamer's book The Meaning of the Pentateuch: Revelation, Composition, and Interpretation (IVP Academic, 2009), was called his magnum opus and was listed among Amazon.com's top 100 sellers.
